1. Introduction to Contrology

Understanding the Method

What was Joseph Pilates actually trying to achieve?

This workshop takes you beyond simply learning exercises and explores the purpose behind the system — how the original apparatus was designed, why it works, and how the method develops strength, mobility, control and overall wellbeing.

We’ll explore the fundamental principles of Contrology, look at the original Mat and Reformer sequences, and examine how the system can be intelligently applied to different bodies.

You’ll also experience a demonstration Reformer workout, seeing how the exercises flow together as a complete system.

You’ll discover:

  • The philosophy and purpose behind Contrology
  • How Joseph Pilates’ apparatus works with the body
  • The fundamental principles of the method
  • How sequencing creates a progressive physical experience
  • How to apply the system to the individual

A perfect starting point for anyone wanting to understand Classical Pilates on a deeper level.

2. Reformers Sequencing and Transitions

From First Exercise to Full Sequence

The Reformer is not simply a collection of exercises — the sequence delivers clarity of how you need to develop your body.

In this workshop we’ll break down the Reformer sequence and explore how it is introduced, developed and progressed through the body.

How do you take someone from their very first Reformer session towards the complete advanced sequence?

We’ll look at exercise order, transitions, pace, preparation and progression, and how each exercise prepares the body for what comes next.

And, most importantly, you’ll experience the workout yourself.

We’ll explore:

  • The logic behind the Reformer sequence
  • How to introduce the work to a beginner
  • Progressive pathways towards advanced exercises
  • Transitions and maintaining flow
  • How sequencing changes the experience of the

3. The Mat, Magic Circle and Cadillac

Master the Mat

The Mat looks simple. It isn’t.

Mastering Joseph Pilates’ original Mat sequence is one of the greatest challenges in the system — requiring strength, control, mobility, coordination and a deep understanding of the work.

This workshop explores Joe’s original Mat sequence, including the use of the Magic Circle to assist, challenge and refine your movement.

We’ll then take the work to the Cadillac, using specific exercises to develop the strength, articulation and control needed to make the Mat sequence feel more accessible.

You’ll explore:

  • Joseph Pilates’ original Mat sequence
  • How to use the Magic Circle effectively
  • Exercises that assist and deepen your Mat work
  • Cadillac exercises that prepare the body for the Mat
  • How the apparatus supports progression
  • Developing control, connection and flow

A deep dive into one of the most demanding — and rewarding — parts of Contrology.

4. The Chairs

The Beasts of the Studio

The Chairs are different.

They challenge you, expose you, and ask your body to find strength and control in completely new ways.

In this workshop we’ll explore all three  Chairs and discover what makes them such powerful pieces of apparatus.

You’ll learn how the Chairs can challenge strength, balance, coordination and mobility — and how they can create remarkably fast changes in the body.

This is an opportunity to get hands-on, experiment and play with the apparatus, while developing an understanding of how the Chairs fit into the system.

We’ll explore:

  • All three Classical Chairs
  • The purpose and character of each apparatus
  • How the Chairs challenge the body differently
  • Exercises for strength, mobility and control
  • How to use the Chairs to create change
  • How the apparatus can inform your teaching and practice

Come and meet the beasts.
